CALM THE ALARM
We settle the fight, flight and freeze response that’s running through the night. Most women feel some relief by the end of session one.
If you wake with your heart pounding, dream the same frightening scene again and again, or stay up late because sleep itself feels unsafe – this page is for you. Nightmares after a hard time are not a sign of weakness. They’re a nervous system finishing a job it never got to finish.

WHAT THEY ARE
Dreaming is how the brain files the day. After trauma or sustained stress, the filing jams: the same material keeps being replayed because the system has flagged it as unfinished, and unsafe.
WHAT CAUSES THEM
During the day, your conscious mind can keep a frightening memory at bay. At night, that guard clocks off – and the part of the brain that holds the threat gets the floor. Nightmares are what unresolved experience looks like when nothing is holding it back.
The conscious brain · Prefrontal cortex
By day, you can distract, rationalise and stay busy. Asleep, none of that is available. Which is why ‘thinking calm thoughts before bed’ makes so little difference.
The subconscious brain · Limbic system
The emotional brain keeps replaying the material it has marked as dangerous, trying to resolve it. Until it does, the nightmares continue – so that’s where my treatment goes.
WHY THIS IS HAPPENING TO YOU
Nightmares usually follow an experience your nervous system hasn’t been able to put in the past – an accident, a loss, a betrayal, an abusive relationship, a birth that didn’t go as it should. It doesn’t have to be the thing you dream about. Often the dream is a stand-in for a feeling the body hasn’t released.
Your system isn’t malfunctioning. It is trying, night after night, to complete something. The replay is an attempt at resolution that keeps failing because the memory is stored as present-tense danger.
This is why sleep hygiene, herbal teas and relaxation apps help only at the edges. They don’t reach the file that’s marked unfinished.
There is nothing wrong with you. Your system is on high alert, trying to protect you. It can learn to stand down.
IS RECOVERY POSSIBLE?
Trauma-focused treatment can change how a memory is stored – from present-tense threat to past-tense event. When that happens, the nervous system stops replaying it, and sleep comes back. That is what a Bespoke Therapy Program is built to do.
We settle the fight, flight and freeze response that’s running through the night. Most women feel some relief by the end of session one.
Using attachment-focused EMDR and other proven methods, your nervous system files what happened as over – without you having to relive or retell it in detail.
With the replay stopped, we restore the sense that your bed, and your body, are safe places to be.
Every program is written for you, session by session, with the result each one is working towards agreed before we begin – and progress measured as we go.
