“It only took one session with Sarah to relieve from some of the personal pain I was holding onto from a traumatic personal event. I felt so much better in the days and weeks after and I am eternally grateful.”

WHAT THEY ARE

A flashback is a memory your body doesn’t know is a memory.

Ordinary memories come with a timestamp: that was then. A traumatic memory is stored without one. When something triggers it, your nervous system responds as if the event is happening right now – because, as far as it can tell, it is.

  • Sensory flashbacksA smell, a sound, a face – and you’re there, with the images or sensations of that moment.
  • Emotional flashbacksNo picture, just the feeling: suddenly small, terrified, ashamed or trapped, with no obvious reason.
  • Body memoriesA tight chest, nausea, shaking – the body re-running the event without the story attached.
  • Triggers everywhereNames, places, anniversaries, a particular time of day.
  • Lost timeComing back to the room and realising minutes have passed.
  • Shame afterwardsFeeling foolish or broken for ‘overreacting’ to something small.

WHAT CAUSES THEM

Trauma is stored differently from other memories.

When something overwhelms you, the brain’s usual filing – which stamps a memory as finished and puts it in the past – is interrupted. The raw material gets stored as it was experienced: unfinished, sensory, and current. A trigger reopens the file exactly as it was left.

The conscious brain · Prefrontal cortex

Where you know it’s over.

You can tell yourself you’re safe now, that it was years ago, that this isn’t that. During a flashback, this part of the brain is largely offline – which is why reasoning doesn’t stop one.

The subconscious brain · Limbic system

Where the memory is held as ‘now’.

The emotional brain fires the full survival response because it believes the threat is present. Treatment has to work at this level to change how the memory is stored – and that’s where mine does.

WHY THIS IS HAPPENING TO YOU

Your system never got the message that it ended.

Flashbacks follow experiences that were too much, too fast, or that you couldn’t escape – an assault, an accident, an abusive relationship, a frightening birth, a sudden loss. At the time, survival mattered more than filing. So the memory stayed raw.

The triggers that set it off are the nervous system doing careful work: anything that resembles the original danger gets the full response, just in case. It is protection, aimed at a threat that has already passed.

This is why talking about what happened, over and over, so often doesn’t help – and can make things worse. Retelling reopens the file. It doesn’t re-file it.

There is nothing wrong with you. Your system is on high alert, trying to protect you. It can learn to stand down.

IS RECOVERY POSSIBLE?

Yes. The memory can be re-filed as past – and stay there.

Attachment-focused EMDR exists for exactly this. It helps the nervous system complete the processing that was interrupted, so the memory is stored with its timestamp: that was then. The triggers lose their charge, and the flashbacks stop. That is what a Bespoke Therapy Program is built to do.

Step 01

CALM THE ALARM

We reduce the fight, flight and freeze response to your triggers first, so the deeper work is safe. Most women feel some relief by the end of session one.

Step 02

RE-FILE THE MEMORY

Using attachment-focused EMDR, your nervous system recognises what happened as over – without you having to relive or recount every detail.

Step 03

REBUILD THE PRESENT

With the past where it belongs, we rebuild confidence, safety in your body and the freedom to go where you like without bracing.

Every program is written for you, session by session, with the result each one is working towards agreed before we begin – and progress measured as we go.
