WHAT IT IS

Abandonment issues are an attachment system stuck on high alert.

Every human is wired to attach – it’s how we survive. When early bonds were unreliable, or a later relationship ended in betrayal, that wiring learns that closeness is dangerous and loss is coming. It then scans every relationship for the signs, and reacts as if it has found them.

  • Panic at distanceA slow reply, a cancelled plan, a change of tone – and your body is certain it’s over.
  • Needing reassuranceAsking if they’re okay, if you’re okay, if this is okay – and the relief lasting minutes.
  • Clinging or chasingOver-texting, over-giving, staying in relationships that hurt because leaving feels worse.
  • Leaving firstPulling away, picking fights or ending things before anyone can do it to you.
  • Jealousy and checkingMonitoring, mind-reading, searching for evidence that you’re about to be replaced.
  • Losing yourselfShaping yourself around whoever you’re with, so there’s nothing to leave.

WHAT CAUSES IT

Your attachment style was learned. It can be relearned.

Attachment patterns are set by how safe it was to depend on the people who were meant to be there. A parent who was inconsistent, absent or overwhelmed; a loss too early; a partner who lied, cheated or left without warning. The nervous system learned a rule – people go – and it has been protecting you from that ever since.

The conscious brain · Prefrontal cortex

Where you know they’re probably just busy.

You can see it’s a slow reply, not a rejection. You can list every reason they’re not leaving. And your chest is still tight, because the fear isn’t a thought.

The subconscious brain · Limbic system

Where the fear is actually held.

The attachment alarm fires from stored experience, below reasoning. That’s why reassurance wears off, and why my treatment works where the pattern is kept – not on the surface.

WHY THIS IS HAPPENING TO YOU

Somebody taught you that love was unreliable. You believed them.

If you learned early that closeness could vanish, your system became expert at predicting it. If you learned it later – through betrayal, abandonment or a relationship that ended without explanation – the lesson landed on top of whatever was already there. Either way, the fear is not irrational. It is accurate to what happened. It just isn’t accurate to now.

The cruel part is that the fear tends to create what it dreads. The checking, the clinging, the pulling away – they push people, and then the leaving confirms the rule. That is a pattern, not a prophecy. And patterns can change.

This is why understanding your attachment style hasn’t fixed it. Insight tells you what the pattern is. It doesn’t reach the experiences that set it.

There is nothing wrong with you. Your system is on high alert, trying to protect you. It can learn to stand down.

IS RECOVERY POSSIBLE?

Yes. Earned secure attachment is real, and it holds.

Attachment-focused EMDR was developed for exactly this. When the experiences that taught you people leave are resolved, the alarm stops firing at ordinary distance. You can be close without panic, and alone without dread. Therapists call it earned security. That is what a Bespoke Therapy Program is built to do.

Step 01

CALM THE ALARM

We settle the attachment panic – the spiral at a slow reply, the dread at distance – in session, directly. Most women feel some relief by the end of session one.

Step 02

RESOLVE WHERE IT CAME FROM

Using attachment-focused EMDR and other proven methods, the experiences that taught your system love was unreliable are processed and filed as past.

Step 03

REBUILD SECURE CONNECTION

With the alarm quiet, we build self-trust, clear boundaries and the capacity to choose people who stay – and to be okay whether they do or not.

Every program is written for you, session by session, with the result each one is working towards agreed before we begin – and progress measured as we go.
