“I don’t like talking about my problems. Acknowledging I wanted help was hard enough. This is where Sarah helped a lot! In short, I’m creating better boundaries with others and feel more confident in myself and my future.”

WHAT IT IS

Guilt is violating your own standards. Shame is violating other people’s.

Guilt is the sense that you haven’t lived up to what you believe is right. Shame is the sense that you haven’t lived up to what others expect of you. Both matter – they are part of what makes us good to each other. The problem starts when they stop being a signal and become a sentence you keep serving.

  • Guilt about the years you weren’t fully thereMothers who were in survival mode – in an abusive relationship, a crisis, a long stretch of just getting through – and feel their children missed out on their presence and happiness.
  • ‘I should have known’Replaying the signs you think you missed, as if the person you were then could have seen them.
  • Apologising for existingSaying sorry for needs, for taking up space, for having a feeling at all.
  • HidingNot telling anyone what happened, because of what you fear they’d think of you.
  • Staying smallNot asking for the promotion, the help, the boundary – because who are you to ask.
  • Harsh self-judgementSpeaking to yourself in a way you’d never speak to a friend who had been through the same.

WHAT CAUSES IT

You are judging a previous version of yourself with the wisdom you have now.

When we look back, we look back as the wiser, more resourced adult we’ve become. That’s the trap. The version of you who was in it didn’t have what you have now – the knowledge, the support, the capacity to understand what was happening. She responded with what she had at the time. Judging her by today’s standards is a comparison she can never win.

The conscious brain · Prefrontal cortex

Where you know you did your best.

You can reason it through. People have told you it wasn’t your fault, and you can see why they’d say so. And the feeling doesn’t move an inch.

The subconscious brain · Limbic system

Where the verdict is actually held.

Guilt and shame live as a felt sense, not a conclusion – in the body, below reasoning. That’s why insight alone hasn’t shifted them, and why my treatment goes to the level where they’re stored.

WHY THIS IS HAPPENING TO YOU

You were surviving. That took everything you had.

If you were in a relationship where you had to stay alert, keep the peace or just get through each day, there was very little of you left over – for your children, for joy, for yourself. That isn’t a failure of love. It is what survival mode does. It narrows everything down to what’s necessary, and presence and happiness are the first things it takes.

Wanting to believe someone does not make you responsible for their behaviour. Staying because you hoped things would change is not stupidity; it is love and loyalty doing what they do. The version of you who was in it didn’t have the capacity to see it clearly. You do now – because you grew.

And that is the point. We are all, as humans, equally allowed to learn, adapt and grow. We all have innate value – it isn’t earned by getting everything right the first time. Growth doesn’t cancel out who you were. It is who you were, continued.

There is nothing wrong with you. Your system is on high alert, trying to protect you. It can learn to stand down.

IS RECOVERY POSSIBLE?

Yes. Guilt and shame can be resolved, not just managed.

Because guilt and shame are held at the level of experience, they are resolved at the level of experience. When the events underneath are processed, the felt sense of having failed goes with them – and what’s left is a fair, compassionate account of what you did with what you had. That is what a Bespoke Therapy Program is built to do.

Step 01

CALM THE ALARM

We settle the nervous system first, so the deeper work is reachable. Most women feel some relief by the end of session one.

Step 02

RESOLVE WHERE IT CAME FROM

Using attachment-focused EMDR and other proven methods, the experiences that installed the guilt and shame are processed and filed as past – without reliving every detail.

Step 03

REBUILD SELF-TRUST

With the verdict lifted, we rebuild your confidence in your own judgement, your boundaries, and your sense of who you are now – and who you’re becoming.

Every program is written for you, session by session, with the result each one is working towards agreed before we begin – and progress measured as we go.
