“The evening of the first session I had an interaction that would usually have my thoughts lead to worry and anxiety – neither of which happened. I felt a lot clearer and stronger in myself.”

WHAT THEY ARE

Intrusive thoughts are alarms, not intentions.

An intrusive thought is an unwanted thought or image that arrives on its own – often vivid, often the opposite of what you’d ever want – and leaves a wake of dread behind it. Almost everyone has them. What makes them a problem is when they stick.

  • Worst-case flashesA sudden picture of something going terribly wrong – to you, or to someone you love.
  • “What if I…”Thoughts about doing or saying something you’d never do, that frighten you precisely because you wouldn’t.
  • Replaying the pastA memory or moment that keeps forcing its way back in, uninvited.
  • Doubt that won’t settleDid I lock it? Did I say that? Checking, and checking again.
  • Thoughts about the thoughtsFear that having them means something is wrong with you.
  • Exhaustion from fighting themTrying to suppress them takes energy – and brings them back harder.

WHAT CAUSES THEM

Pushing them away is what keeps them coming.

Intrusive thoughts are produced by a threat system running hot. When your nervous system is on alert, your mind generates possible dangers so you can prepare for them. Then it flags each one as important – because it’s frightening – and files it to come back.

The conscious brain · Prefrontal cortex

Where you argue with the thought.

You know the thought isn’t true, or isn’t you. You can reason it through. But reasoning is attention – and attention is exactly what tells the alarm the thought matters.

The subconscious brain · Limbic system

Where the thought is generated.

The threat response doesn’t deal in logic. It deals in danger / not danger. Until it stands down, it keeps producing the material – which is why my treatment works here, not in the argument.

WHY THIS IS HAPPENING TO YOU

Your mind is trying to protect you from something it hasn’t finished with.

Intrusive thoughts cluster around the things you care most about – your children, your safety, your relationships, your sanity. That isn’t a coincidence. A nervous system that has been through something frightening becomes a very diligent guard, and it guards what matters.

Often there is unresolved experience underneath: a loss, a betrayal, a period where you weren’t safe. The thoughts are the system’s way of rehearsing threat so you won’t be caught out again. They are a symptom of stress, not a window into your character.

This is why ‘just stop thinking about it’ has never worked. You can’t out-think a process that runs beneath thought. You have to settle the system that’s generating it.

There is nothing wrong with you. Your system is on high alert, trying to protect you. It can learn to stand down.

IS RECOVERY POSSIBLE?

Yes. When the alarm stands down, the thoughts lose their grip.

Intrusive thoughts don’t need to be analysed one by one. When the nervous system that produces them is settled and the experiences underneath are resolved, they thin out on their own – and the ones that still arrive stop carrying dread. That is what a Bespoke Therapy Program is built to do.

Step 01

CALM THE ALARM

We reduce the threat response that’s generating the thoughts – in session, not with homework. Most women feel some relief by the end of session one.

Step 02

RESOLVE WHAT’S UNDERNEATH

Using attachment-focused EMDR and other proven methods, the experiences your mind keeps rehearsing are filed away as past, not present – without you having to relive them.

Step 03

REBUILD YOUR TRUST IN YOUR OWN MIND

Once the thoughts lose their charge, we rebuild the confidence that your mind is yours, and safe to be in.

Every program is written for you, session by session, with the result each one is working towards agreed before we begin – and progress measured as we go.
