WHY IT HAPPENS

Think of your nervous system as a tank.

Everything fills it: poor sleep, noise, mess, deadlines, a relationship that takes more than it gives, worry about money or health, an old hurt you’re still carrying.

When the tank is nearly full there’s no buffer left. So something small lands on a system that’s already at the edge, and the fight response fires in full. The anger isn’t really about the spilled drink. It’s the pressure finding the only exit it has.

KNOW YOUR WARNING SIGNS

Most people get signals before they snap.

  • A tight jaw or fistsYour body bracing before your mind has caught up.
  • Heat in your face or chestA rush that says the alarm is switching on.
  • Faster, louder wordsTalking over people, or a sharper edge in your voice.
  • Feeling crowdedTouched-out, over-stimulated, needing everyone to just stop.
  • “Why does no one help me?”Resentment thoughts are often the tank talking.
  • Going quiet firstFor some people, a cold, clipped silence comes before the explosion.

Write down your top three, so you can catch them sooner next time.

WHEN YOU NOTICE THE SIGNS

Four steps before it spills over.

The earlier you catch it, the easier it is.

01

STEP AWAY

“I need a minute. I’ll be right back.” Go to another room, or step outside for sixty seconds.

02

LENGTHEN YOUR OUT-BREATH

Breathe in for four and out for seven, five times. A longer out-breath helps your body come down.

03

DROP YOUR SHOULDERS

Unclench your jaw and hands. Let your shoulders fall on the out-breath.

04

TURN THE INPUT DOWN

Switch off the TV, music or noise if you can. Less coming in means more room inside.

IF YOU’VE ALREADY SNAPPED

Repair matters more than perfection.

Everyone gets it wrong sometimes. What matters is what happens next. When you’re calm: “I’m sorry I yelled. I was overwhelmed, and that wasn’t okay. It wasn’t your fault.”

Children (and partners) learn more from a calm, honest repair than from someone who never gets it wrong. Then let the guilt go. Guilt adds to the tank.

EMPTY THE TANK MORE OFTEN

Small top-ups through the day.

  • Reduce one thingNotice what fills your tank fastest, and cut back one thing this week.
  • Build in pausesFive minutes alone, a walk, a cup of tea, sitting in the car before you go inside.
  • Ask for one thingAsk for help with one specific task, rather than carrying it all and hoping someone notices.

WHEN TO GET HELP SOONER

Please don’t wait if…

Your anger ever feels out of control, or you’re worried about hurting someone. Book in with your GP, or call Lifeline on 13 11 14 (24/7) to talk it through. In an emergency, call 000.

Someone else’s anger is making you feel unsafe. Call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 (24/7) for confidential support.

COPING OR RESOLVING?

You shouldn’t have to keep coping with this.

Coping tools can help you get through a moment. They don’t change why it keeps happening.

My work is different. I don’t teach coping techniques. In session, we work on the patterns driving the symptom – the alarm underneath, and what set it off – with the aim of resolving it, so you’re not left managing it for the rest of your life.

You’re not too much. You’re carrying too much. There can be room again.
